Volvo C40 Recharge electric SUV launched, priced at Rs 61.25 lakh

Volvo Car India has launched its second electric model -- the Volvo C40 Recharge -- in the country at an introductory price of Rs 61.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The carmaker also sells the Volvo XC40 Recharge. Both are sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

The C40 Recharge is Volvo's maiden born electric vehicle (BEV). Bookings for the electric SUV opened today, exclusively via Volvo's website for a refundable amount of Rs 1 lakh. Only the deliveries, which will start this month itself, will take place through dealerships.

The C40 Recharge is being assembled at Volvo's Hosakote plant in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Despite being locally-assembled, it is Rs 4.35 lakh more expensive than the XC40 Recharge, which is priced at Rs 56.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Volvo aims to electrify its entire portfolio by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2040.

The Indian arm of the Swedish carmaker is offering an ownership package with the electric SUV that includes three years of comprehensive car warranty, three years of Volvo service package, three years of roadside assistance, eight years or 1.60 lakh kilometres of battery warranty, five years subscription to digital services and one 11kW wall box charger.

The company has also announced that the exclusive 'Tre Kronor Experience' program, which was rolled out for the XC40 Recharge customers, will be extended to the C40 Recharge customers. Tre-Kronor offers a host of unique luxury and personalised experiences.

Based on the compact modular architecture (CMA) platform, the India-spec C40 Recharge comes with twin motors, one on each axle, with a combined output of 408hp and 660Nm. The power is supplied by a 78kWh lithium-ion battery, which weighs 500kg. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.7 seconds and touch a top speed of 180kmph. The all-wheel drive (AWD) feature is standard.

With an 11kW wall box charger, the C40 Recharge can be charged from 0-100% in 7-8 hours (or around 50–60km range per hour). Using a 150kW DC fast charger, the electric SUV can be charged from 10-80% in approximately 27 minutes (or around 80-100km range in 10 minutes).

The claimed WLTP range for the Volvo C40 Recharge is 530km, while the claimed range is 683km as per ICAT testing conditions on a single full charge.

Volvo currently has a share of 25% in the country's luxury EV market. At present, there is no direct rival of the Volvo C40 Recharge in the Indian market.
